Maria and the gardener were in the garden right before the gardener "put his tools away". Grandpa Charles spotted them as they chatted in the yard.
Grandpa Charles asked the gardener to come to his study to talk. When they got there, he threatened the gardener that he would send Maria away and never return as well as have the gardener thrown in jail. Out of spontaneity, the gardener hit Granpa Charles with his garden tool.
Maria came looking for the two of them just to find the gardener and her Grandfather dead...The gardener began to explain what had happened and the two came up with an idea to lie about the murder.
This leads us here...Maria "discovering" her grandfather dead in his study.
